Notebook kept by William Greenleaf Eliot. Includes Eliot's thoughts on political affairs in the South, and the outbreak of the Civil War; formation of the St. Louis Provident Association; correspondence with Wayman Crow; sermons on various subjects; and material on Washington University. 'Sermons of special interest are: (1) Eliot's Annual Charity Sermon delivered 11 November 1860; (2) A sermon entitled "My Creed"; (3) A sermon entitled "The Higher Law Doctrine, North and South," delivered 27 January 1861 (pages 150 - 158). Slavery issue: (1) Note about getting Sarah Green out of Lynch's Slaves Yard (page 34); (2) Newspaper clipping of interest: "The Higher Law Doctrine. North and South," by William Greenleaf Eliot from The Republican, 1861 (pages 150-158) (clipping also in Series 04, folder 1861). Washington University materials of special interest are: (1) Endowment and building fund, (2) Organization of the Law Department, (3) Board of Directors' meeting, (4) Mary Institute--organization resolution, (5) Meetings of the Managers of Mary Institute. One page of insert between pages 18 and 19 has been deleted and part of pages 23-24 is missing.
