Notebook kept by William Greenleaf Eliot. Includes Eliot's personal philosophy and thoughts on Unitarianism; Eliot's reactions to "An Act Concerning Slaves, Free Negroes, and Mulattoes" (page 143); Eliot's work at Washington University and with the Church of the Messiah. Washington University materials of special interest are: (1) The founding of a Boys' Industrial School; (2) Establishment of Washington Institute (name changed to O'Fallon Institute); (3) Mary Institute; (4) Washington University--report on present condition and status, and general endowment; (5) Meeting of Board of Directors of Washington University (21 February 1860); (6) Informal Report of President on Endowment Fund Church of the Messiah materials of special interest are: (1) Eliot's personal history and history of the founding of the Church of the Messiah (pages 101-131); (2) Report presented to Charitable Association of the Church of the Messiah, 13 May 1855 (page 78); (3) Establishment of Young Men's Benevolent Association of the Church of the Messiah; (4) "Report [by Eliot] to the Trustees of the Church of the Messiah', and the condition and program of the Mission House of the Church. Slavery issue: (1) Newspaper clipping of correspondence to the editor of The Christian Register by Eliot regarding his views on slavery (page 39); (2) Newspaper clipping “From the Paris Mercury, Free Negroes and Mulattoes” (page 41); (3) Newspaper clipping “An Act Concerning Slaves, Free Negroes, and Mulattoes” and Eliot’s reactions (page 143); (4) Newspaper clipping regarding slaves and the Union (page 148).
