Description
Summary: Dawes writes to William to keep the money and pay tax and Mr. Chamberlain. There may be a small overpayment but he's not sure of how much and hopes it can be settled by deducting it from the next interest. He says Paul's health is improving, with nightmares becoming less frequent and intense. He believes that the immediate cause of Paul's ailment was a very hot day. Dawes is "grieved" to hear of William's account of St. Louis, and does not speak well of Missouri's representatives in Washington. "Mother" is well and she and "the rest" go daily to the Capitol. Washington is "quiet but arming", and he notes that if Viriginia and Maryland "go" [secede?] he is going to send the women away. [Thomas] Dawes [Eliot] in Washington to William [Greenleaf Eliot].
