Description
Summary: William writes in answer to Thom’s letter of [August] 5th to say that their ideas for Thom’s “coming here” are in common, and that there is a “magnificent working place” for Thom. William writes of Etta [Mack], sending his love and asking Thom whether the letter he sent with advice reached her in Amherst, New Hampshire. He suggests that Thom be ordained as an “Evangelist” on October 13th, and that Thom and Etta be married on November 25th, with Hal as Groomsman. He invites them to stay through Christmas or New Year’s, after which point they should know where they would like to settle. William notes that Etta would likely wish to remain at “home”, but urges Thom that the husband should take the wife into his home. He offers them space in the attic or spare room, saying that whatever the plan their first year [of marriage] should be “only of diligence and learning.” William Greenleaf Eliot to Thom.
